Ok I’ve got a secret to share with you... *whispers* I don’t sew all my clothes and I have no intention to either 😳

Phew. That feels like a weight off my shoulders to tell you! I know, it’s a bit of a 180 degree turn. Here I am making my own coat, underwear and now talking about bras but I don’t have any want or wish to make a fully me-made wardrobe?! 😱

There’s so much to unpack here (maybe a blog post worth?) but one thing I’ve noticed is that as great as the maker community is, you can feel pressured into thinking you need to make eveeeerything. I applaud you guys who do manage it! But it’s just not realistic for me. In my early blogging years I felt a lot of pressure and guilt for not being able to keep up but as you can probably tell, I’m trying to shed all of those woes!

I also think the environmental argument has also pushed us into thinking me-made is best and can make it seem like RTW/shop bought is a dirty word. But again it’s not as simple as that (even sewing can fall into the fast fashion pitfalls! Who else of guilty of making a new outfit for an event just because you can?! 🙋🏾‍♀️😳 Plus I haven’t even started in the classism tangled up in this...)

From the time cost, to the money cost- sewing your own wardrobe isn’t always possible. But we can take a lot from our craft and be proud of that. From caring for our clothes properly, choosing better fibres (where possible) and wearing them until the fabric disintegrates (and then chopping them up into something else). There’s lots of routes up the sustainable mountain... 🌍🌏🌎

Does anyone else relate to this? Because sometimes I think I must be making things up and then I put it out there and a whole bunch of you are like: “I feel the same way!” And honestly it makes me feel so much better!

AD| 🩲So apparently I'm an underwear sewer now. Honestly I've always felt like underwear sewing was a big sewing milestone- like coat or trouser making. I've never really been that motivated to sew them because of all the notions etc I thought you needed but when Amy @craftandthriftshop asked if I wanted to try out one of her deadstock fabric kits I jumped at the chance to try something new. You guys already know it wasn't plain sailing but I got there in the end and I'm so proud of myself! It's definitely a learning curve and mine are far from perfect but once you get your head around it you'll be sewing them up in no time. And they really are the comfiest underwear I own!

I really loved that the kit came with everything I needed so all I had to worry about was the pattern and the making! Check out my blog post for my tips and links to super helpful blog posts by @ohsewthatmercedes and tutorials by @athreadthatbinds . Swipe across to see the effect of steam on a seam- magic I tell you!

Are you a sewing undies pro? Or are you scared of sewing underwear? I'm not sure if I've put you guys off but I feel like if I can do it, anyone can do it! Even if sewing underwear isn’t for you, check out the blog post to hear what my daughter said in the making process. Why are children like this?! 😫😂

Arghhh. Sewing SOS 🚨 So I *might* have time to sew tonight and have this zero waste gathered dress (by @birgittahelmersson ) cut out for a week now (perfect to test out the gathering foot from @pfaffuk . And Sod’s law, I don’t have the right coloured thread. I wouldn’t be so fussed but this has button holes going down the entire front and some top stitching.

So here’s the issue- I want to sew asap so buying a single thread online isn’t going to happen, nor can I get it Click and collect. And as much as I’d like to think that getting a matching thread for my outfit is essential travel... I can’t really justify that 😂

So help me out! I’ve numbered them if you swipe across. It’s got dead salmon vibes (bonus points if you get that colour reference 😂) so I’m thinking it will take a grey/beige well?

Ok, so I've been pretty open about the fact that I feel like my relationship with Instagram is changing and it sounds like a lot of you have been struggling with the same issues as me. So I put some of my thoughts and reflections down in a blog post and you know what? It made me realise just how much I love writing! It's so nice not to be restricted by 'content' and just have the freedom to write as much as I want. Plus I talk about how I've felt a little pigeon holed and just want to shake things up a bit!

I know blogs aren't for everyone- I hear you guys! It's hard enough to juggle one app let alone start checking out individual blog posts. But it's there if you want to read, and I'll post a few extracts on my stories (some people said they preferred that too). I want to make sure it's as accessible as possible, but still authentic to me.

Would love to hear your thoughts! Have you been feeling the same? Do you reflect on your social media use and the impact it has on your life? Or is it a non-issue? As ever, I'm all ears!

Lately I’ve been just sharing more general musings and tidbits on my stories. Just freeing up my Instagram space (blog post coming on that soon!) It’s been *so* lovely to learn more about you guys through it. I mean I love a bit of sewing chat but nothing gets you guys talking as much as the “delay” button on the washing machine! (You’re welcome!)😂

From your coffee order, to your laundry-> cupboard timelines. I love learning about, and from you and I really appreciate you joining in. What a fabulous community ❤️

This photo (if you missed it) is of my £2.39 beauty secret, handed down from my mum. I credit it with keeping my (super) dry skin hydrated and complexion clear& bright. So funny to hear from other die-hard fans, as well as hearing your bargain beauty secrets. I actually prefer to get my make up and skin care tips from you guys! I find ‘Beauty bloggers’ don’t do it for me. I need real life, apply with fingers/in the car, minimal input skin care and make up. Do you feel me?

Now I’m off to find this £1.50 Boots cream you’ve told me about 👀 Let me know if there’s anything else I need to check out! We need to create a secret beauty/skincare @bootsuk club 😂

P.S. the sewing blog returns soon and sorry if I confused my blog subscribers with my password protected post! Trials and tribulations of sewing underwear is coming next week 🩲

Gosh it feels like it’s been a while since I shared a make! And it’s a super cosy one! ❄️Ad| fabric bought with voucher @thefabricsales no obligation to post (pre-Brexit)❄️

I really wanted a cosy knit co-ord but there was no way I was going to get my knitting needles out for that. Thankfully you can actually buy knitted fabric-cabled and everything! But I’m not gonna lie- this make tested my patience. The skirt went ok but I found it really difficult to keep the top from stretching out and it became a matter of “just get it done” 😫

My tips: overlock the edges of the fabric to prevent fraying, stay-stitch edges so that it doesn’t stretch out as you cut through the cabling. Go for as simple of a pattern as you can! I totally should have made it as a jumper dress. Avoid anything too bulky seam wise-I did a single fold neckline!

I tried using stabiliser for the hem but it wouldn’t stick. In the end I did a blind hem stitch which worked well on the skirt. Not so much the top. Swipe to see the wobbly hem 😳

So ok, it’s not my neatest make but you know what? I don’t even care! I’ve worn it so many times. It’s like a warm hug. And I refuse to believe that I’m the only sewer who wears wonky hems. We all have projects that aren’t “perfect” (I’m still waiting on that “perfect” make). All that matters is how we feel wearing it. And I feel fab 😊

Go on, tell me- what’s your favourite perfectly imperfect sew? If you’re feeling brave post a picture and tag #PerfectlyImperfectSew
