Let’s talk reusable period products (part 1: Menstrual Cups)

    31st October 2020 /

So this blog post has been a long time coming! A lot of you will know that I gave up single use period products over a year ago (18 months and counting!) and so many of you have reached out to me asking about it, so I thought I’d write you a post of my experiences of the switch. But…

We all start as beginners!

I haven’t really done any sewing for a while but was excited to test out an underwear pattern last night. “Just whip it up” I thought. Yeah. No. That is not what happened. Instead it was 11pm and I wanted to throw my machine out of the window, set the undies on fire and quit sewing. Was it an overreaction? Perhaps. (OK, yes!) but my husband just laughed and reminded me “you’ve got to start somewhere and you’ll figure it out by tomorrow”. And he’s right (don’t tell him I said that).

Ok, so today has come and I haven’t quite figured it out yet, but I will. I didn’t start sewing with a semi-tailored wool coat, there were plenty of sewing missteps on the journey there. And while my ego is a little bruised that I didn’t just find this a breeze, that’s reality. Sometimes seeing everyone with near perfect makes (even your own!) gets to our heads. So here’s a reminder to any of you sewing/craft newbies, or even you-the seasoned maker trying your hand at something - you’ve got this! It’s ok to get it wrong! Each stitch, each make is a chance to learn something. You can only get better (*she repeats to herself before picking up the underwear again*)

Did you need that reminder? No? Just me...?

P.S. this flatlay is a kit from @craftandthriftshop which is going to be used in an upcoming collaboration/AD but this post is not part of the ad hence not marked as an ad but being transparent about the fabric photographed etc etc (attempts to explain so I don’t get angry messages 🙏🏾 ok thanks for reading this far!)

I have so many thoughts I want to share with you, about so many topics! But one I haven’t quite found the words for is about Instagram. I love this little space we have created but also think something has changed in the last year. And I think some of you have felt it too? This isn’t the post to go into all of it (more of a blog post/essay knowing me 😬) but it has made me reflect on how I use it and how it influences my sewing.

These PJs were a step back towards the basics, sewing for myself and trying something new. There is so much joy to be had in sewing something just for yourself (I know the irony of me saying that when I’ve posted a photo of my PJs for thousands to see 😂) But look at that print! Isn’t it joyful?*

And after sorting my fabric stash I’m looking at more ways to use up those small remnants and for the first time ever quite fancy my hand at sewing some underwear! 🩲🩲

Have you dived into the world of underwear? Is it worth it? Any particular patterns you suggest?

This PJ bottom is a free pattern from @trevorlovesmommy but @thriftystitcher also offers a free pattern and class for beginners too.

Fabric: Liberty cotton lawn [*prev gifted as part of Minerva Blogger network]

As much as I’d like to pretend I’m all dressed up all the time, we all know that’s not true! I thought it might be nice to see the Rumana coat dressed down a bit too (and also because this is what I look like on most days where I’m not at work!)

Personally I think I look just as glam on my nursery run clothes 😉Plus there is something SO lovely about that swishy long length. Honestly it was the thing that I wasn’t sure about with this pattern (being a small 5’2”) but it makes me feel so fancy 💁🏾‍♀️ Plus the lining just slides across your legs so you don’t get caught up in it when you’re walking.

You can see I haven’t done any buttons on this one- mainly because I couldn’t decide on which ones and now because I’m scared of ruining it. I have made a belt but I prefer it without. What do you think? Should I add the buttons? It’s a bit loose overall so won’t give a cinched effect of other Rumana coats you might have seen. But then how practical is an open coat in winter (it’s been ok so far, but annoying when it’s windy!)

What a dreamy morning learning bargello with @thebargelloedit I booked it for myself during my with stress in December to give me something to look forward to in the new year! I loved it 🧡

It has really made me nostalgic about workshops and classes though. I’ve only been attending things like that for the past few years, mainly doing my learning before that via YouTube/the internet. But I’ve come to realise that nothing quite beats having someone teach you! And you also get to meet new people. I think I’ve always been too shy to attend things on my own but once you go you always find someone to chat to! Plus it’s such a nice way to dive into something completely new. Do you like to attend workshops? Or a bit shy like me? Let me know if there’s any i have to check out!

And yes, if anyone is keeping tabs, here’s yet another couch craft too add to my collection 😍

This year I feel like I’m going to a notebook person 📖 At work I get through quite a few notebooks but I’m one of those people who hoards my ‘nice’ ones. Worse than that, I have a collection of pretty ones which I have used for around 10 pages and then leave empty because I stopped using it for it’s purpose- like a travel diary or revision book. How do you deal with things like that? Just turn the page and start afresh and use it for something new? This makes more sense than my method of just leaving it unloved and unfilled on a shelf 😂 but I just can’t bring myself to do it?? I need to stop being so precious about it!

But I really feel like my brain just needs to dump it’s thoughts on paper so I’m gonna do it... maybe...

Btw I had high hopes for this morning. Woke up and got my workout done at 7:30 and then planned to get some blog admin done. See if I could dust those cobwebs off! And then I lost my blog 🤦🏾‍♀️ can’t access it, can’t edit it- it’s somewhere in the internet but I can’t see it and nor can you! Whoops.

Soo yeah. How’s your morning going?

There’s been so many lovely reflections on the past year and what lays ahead. From a personal point of view 2021 has a giant red question mark on top of it and I have no idea or plans for how it will turn out. Sorry if you were expecting me to be that person with a million resolutions 😂 but it’s kinda exciting to not know how the next few months will unfold, if a little stressful!?

In a material way 2020 was not the most productive year, but I’ve taken my crafting back to basics: doing it for myself, to help me relax and unwind with everything going on. I’ve actually surprised myself by enjoying my slow projects and yeah, I’m amazed that I’ve become an even slower sewer 😂 but there’s no shame in that! 2020 was the year to just make through in one piece and I hope you’ve all managed that.

And as I said in my stories the other day: I’m trying not to mourn a year ‘’lost” but look forward and appreciate that every second that past has brought us to this moment now. And this moment is full of hope ❤️

Hope you’ve had a restful start to 2021. Did you do anything special? I was alone on the sofa (husband on night shifts) knitting and watching Graham Norton 😂 ie the perfect NYE.

Outfit: made in the summer with fabric gifted from @rainbowfabrickilburn (no obligation to post)

Skirt: self drafted midi skirt
Too: hacked Nora top @tillybuttons with gathered sleeves. #SewingNora
